Sewn : Pink Pleated Chiffon Skirt

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Today I realized something. Almost all, if not all my pictures are taken of the right side of my body. You never see my short arm. I've thought I did that kind of accidentally (I like the right side of my face better, ha) but I'm beginning to wonder if I do it more subconsciously than I realize.. So,

Nothing to hide. But I guess at the same time I know it's definitely weird looking at someone without a hand (it's the same for me when I see someone without a leg) and you know, it's ok to admit that too. It is different and takes some getting used to. But I guess I'm just realizing that at the end of the day, this is me! And really there's no point in not being ok with me.
And really as long as I can still carry in more groceries at one time than my mom, I'm happy. haha
Top: ASOS Skirt: Handmade, Shoes: Shoemint
Alright to the skirt,
This skirt I've already posted, but I desperately needed some updated pictures so there you go. I made this so long ago that I honestly don't remember where I got the fabric but I did find some similar fabric that I'll link to below.

Oh and I know these pictures look like I went way too vibrancy-happy on the colors ps, I think it's because I actually have a tan for once. ha and the field looks really green for some reason but that's really how it was.

Pattern: self-drafted
(but here are some instructions
showing you how to make a similar one.)

Happy Tuesday! Any fun plans for the week ahead?
I'm playing hooky from school today and going to a One Direction concert. haha I'm way too pumped about it. Any One Direction fans in the house?

Giveaway Winner + Etsy Update

The winner of the ASOS gift card giveaway is,

(Yay girl I was so excited when it was you!) I hope you enjoy it and get something really cute for the rest of us. :) I e-mailed you, let me know if you don't get it.

And ok so after thinking it over for too long, I've decided to sell my lace wrap back dress. It's near and dear to my heart so this is kind of hard for me (first world problems, haha) but I just have never worn it since I've made it (I'm not cool enough to have fancy parties to wear it to) so I'm hoping someone else will be able to wear it instead!
The listing can be found here. Happy Wednesday everyone!

Sewn : Hawaiian Print Dress

Friday, September 5, 2014

My goal this summer was to find a hawaiian print dress similar to the ones I've been seeing around.  I ironically had a family reunion in Hawaii this summer (not somewhere I typically get to go to but definitely not complaining!) so that worked out well.

The problem was that the original dress was sleeveless and I didn't want that so I decided to shorten the dress a bit and make sleeves out of that.

But now I think it's too short so I can never win. Ah man, oh well. I did what I could do so I guess I can't have regrets. I just need to be like 5" shorter and then it would be perfect.

For the sleeves, I just used a really rough sketch of a cap sleeve pattern (same one used for this dress.) I didn't bother measuring the armhole because I knew I didn't want the sleeve to go all the way around. And It worked perfectly! Yay for laziness working to my benefit. haha

Overall I really like it. I love the double ruffle on the bottom and I love the print of the fabric. I do just wish it was longer though. I tried everything I could and really there would have been no way to get any more length aside from buying a second dress so I guess I can't have regrets. But still, kind of annoying.

And last thing, sorry to self-promote but I follow this cute girl Caitlin's blog, and she did a feature on me the other day! It made my day so I wanted to make sure to mention it.

Happy Friday everyone!

5 Winter Favorites

1... This cute Christmas card (top left).

This above collage is my entry for the Minted inspiration board challenge this year. If anyone else enters let me know so I can send your board some love!

2... Buzzcut Season by Lorde. I listen to this song about, 15 times per day. haha really though. I know Lorde is all the rage right now but at least the hype is warranted this time, I loove her voice.

3... This little lady. How there can be so much talent wrapped up into one person is beyond me. Seriously I need to stop looking at this blog, it's making me question everything about any sewing ability I ever thought I once had. haha really though, this girl is amazing.

4... Netflix.. So here's the thing. I was into Breaking Bad for a while but then it just got to be too much for me. Too much gah, I don't know, just horribleness. Maybe I'm naive but I couldn't handle it. So I want a new show. I was thinking Carrie Diaries maybe? (Polar opposite from Breaking Bad. haha) Or else right now I've been into Untold Stories of the ER. But please, suggestions are welcome!

5... Ghost Map by Steven Johnson. About the cholera epidemic in London in the 1860s. Super, super fascinating! And I have a love affair with London currently so that makes it all the better.

6... Bijou Market. This weekend in Provo! I love when this is held. Local people I hope to see you all there!

Sewn : Madewell Inspired Striped Dress

Saturday, October 26, 2013

Hi guys! Wow has it been long since I've posted. School/work/trying-to-keep-sane does that to you I guess though.
Here's my latest project! A multi-directional striped dress inspired by this lovely one I saw from Madewell.

The pattern for the bodice and the sleeves is Simplicity 4802. The only changes I made to the  pattern were that I re-drafted the neckline, added length on the sleeves so I could do cuffs on the bottom, and then just added a lining.

The skirt pattern is self-drafted, meaning that I took two rectangles of fabric, added pleats, and pretended like I knew what I was doing. haha it works!

Sorry by the way that I look so melancholy in these photos, I don't know what the deal is there. (Mom you were right, I should have smiled more. :)

Then an exposed metal zipper down the back to give the dress a bit more contrast (it was starting to feel a little too 60's homemaker for me, haha).
And that's that! Now I'm off to go watch One Direction interviews on YouTube. That's definitely the most productive thing I could be doing with my time right now so it's all good. haha they're seriously hilarious, I'm telling you.

Pattern: Vintage Simplicity 4802 (minor adjustments)

Mood

Friday, February 8, 2013

Starting in March I will be joining the Mood Sewing Network and you could say I am a little bit excited. Like I think I got an hour of sleep the night they asked me, ha for real though, I am so freaking excited! So what is it exactly? It's a community of 10 bloggers who sew monthly for Mood's online blog and get to choose different fabrics to use from their fabric store (the one they go to on Project Runway). The other bloggers, or most of them at least, are lucky enough to be closer to New York so they go to the actual store but they also have an online store which I will be using. Anyways, I'm pumped for life and even though most of you won't even notice a difference I figured I'd say something anyways since I will be referencing it in future posts.

Honestly I'm still trying to figure out why they picked me (because if you have seen the other bloggers, oh my gosh being in over my head is an understatement) but for now I'm just going to go with it and pretend like I know. haha, thanks so much Mood!

Teen Vogue Fashion U

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

I spent this past weekend at Fashion U, a design seminar held in New York for students interested in working in the fashion industry. Despite having a super cheesy name, it actually was really cool and provided a lot of insight into the design industry.

The first night they had a kick-off party at H&M. My favorite part was the 25% off but the live band and red carpet was fun too.
They had the cutest mini appetizers everywhere, (think miniature macarons and bite-sized spaghetti things) along with mocktails in fancy glasses and cute waiters serving them. I certainly didn't complain about that.

Saturday was the first day of classes. First, Grace Coddington, creative director for Vogue and in my humble opinion, one of the most innovative people in the fashion industry. She was amazing, as I expected she would be.

Following Grace, I toured the Teen Vogue floor.

Lots of pretty pictures and clothing everywhere. I loved seeing how simple it was. Well, maybe simple isn't the right word, but it just amazed me how such a high fashion, editorial magazine could be made from a bunch of cubicles and clothing racks. It really made me appreciate the astounding talent of those working there. Speaking of which, during the tour I made a complete fool of myself by asking the assistants how long they had been interning for. Fail. Oh well, they were really cool about it and didn't act offended but I felt realllly dumb.
picture
Nicole Richie was up next, complete with papparazzi and the whole shebang.

It was cool to see her in real life, kind of surreal. I got the chance to ask her a question and I was literally shaking. ha, it's kind of ridiculous when you think about it, she's just another human being, but it's just really weird to see someone you've seen on TV all of the time right in front of your face.
Next up was Christian Siriano and yes, I died. This was definitely my favorite seminar out of them all. He is every bit as funny and "fierce" as he is on TV, but nicer in real life, I would say. The show portrayed him as kind of intense and tactless at some points but he didn't seem like that. He was really cool and of course, completely genius and innovative. His new line is very feminine and soft and I love it. I can appreciate his darker things, because of the work and creativity that goes into them, but it's his more subdued items that make me love him so much. By the way, for those in the dark, Christian Siriano was the winner of Project Runway season 2.

We were able to ask him questions too and again, I died. For those who are curious, I asked who he would dress if he could dress anyone and he said either Kate Blanchett or Drew Barrymore. (But he clearly meant me).
After Christian, I went to an internship seminar that I wasn't expecting to learn much from but I seriously think I learned most from that class. I won't bore you with too many details but some of my favorite tips were that you should always bring a pen and paper with you when your boss/internship manager asks you to come into their office. This is probably common knowledge to most of you but I had never thought of that before. Another one was that you should ideally apply to 10 internships each semester in order to give you options. Ya I think that's kind of overkill, if not I am desperately behind. I do think it's a good idea to have options though. You should also ideally graduate college with 2-3 solid internships under your belt.
Last session for the day, Q&aA with the Teen Vogue editors.

Amy Astley is really good at responding to criticism, I learned this after someone asked her why Teen Vogue didn't feature more plus-size girls in their magazine. I loved how Amy responded. I won't try and recap what she had to say because she said it much more eloquently than I could, but it made me really impressed with her. (Well, I should say more impressed with her). I also learned that Sheena Smith (Accessories director, second to right) is from Utah (who knew!), and Andrew Bevan is hilarious and I want him to be my best friend. I have a feeling he would make such a killer shopping partner. I also learned that you don't necessarily have to major in journalism, or marketing in order to work in the fashion industry. This brought music to my Science loving ears.
Sunday morning, we went to a seminar held by the authors of The Nanny Diaries. I just read that book so I really enjoyed this one. They gave us a free copy of their new book and signed it for us.

Then closing session with Rebecca Minkoff and some others representing Shopbop, Polyvore, and Lookbook. They talked about "Fashion in the Digital Age" and I learned some valuable advice about the importance of staying humble online, reciprocating the love, and never posting anything that you'd be embarrassed to have your parents see. Some of that is common knowledge but I'm amazed at how many people don't follow it these days, especially the last one.

I can't decide if my favorite part of this weekend was going to the actual seminars, the free bag of goodies, meeting the 3 coolest girls ever (2 of which are from Utah, and one who has a blog that is literally in my top 5 favorite blogs of all time.) Or maybe my favorite part was just being with my momma. Spending time with her and watching a movie and eating Fro Yo with her at 3 AM. I guess I loved it all. New York, you've been good to me.
