Sewn : Textured Floral Knit Dress

Friday, October 31, 2014

Sorry I look stupid in this picture, it's freezing outside now  of course (or at least was the day I posted this) so I don't want to take new ones. I'm the world's worst blogger, haha.

So here's a dress I just made. I fell in love with this fabric when I first found it but then I was on the fence about it once the dress was done. Don't you hate that? There's just something about it that reminds me of Cruella DeVille though. Ah! Not what I was going for at all. ha hey maybe that'd be a good Halloween costume?

I used the same pattern that I used for this dress from the Stylish Dress japanese sewing pattern book. I love this pattern, it's easy so there's not much you can do to screw up and the dress is just really easy and comfortable to wear, easy to slip on, etc. That's my kind of dress, especially during the school year when I just want something comfy and loose.

The only tweaks I made this time around were just adding some length (cut off too much last time, the original pattern is really long though) and made the silhouette more a-line. Oh I added sleeves! I forgot the original pattern didn't have that.

I really love the gold buttons down the front, I think the contrast with the black and white fabric looks cool. I used black elastic cording in place of the handmade bias that the pattern calls for (for the button fasteners) and I recommend that because it was a lot quicker. And I think it looks better personally. It was a beast to get the cording sewn in place though, that stuff doesn't want to stay pinned.

    1. Oh my gosh me too, I wear the more versatile pieces of my closet way too much and leave the rest of it to wear like never. haha and this is a problem because I'm talking like the same 2 or 3 shirts/dresses/pants and never wear the rest. Ah! Oh well, when you like something you stick to it right? :) Thanks Michelle.

    1. Oh my gosh you are GENIUS. Why did I not think of that? Wow I feel so stupid now. haha that seriously would have saved me so much hassle. Thanks so much Rootaberger! I need to have you on hand for future projects, haha seriously though.

By the way, I'd like to call you by your first name but your profile doesn't have a name or blog attached so I guess we'll go with rootaberger for now. :) Really thank you!

  11. I love everything about it! The shape, the print, the buttons... I'm curious, do the girls at school always compliment your wardrobe? I've been wondering lately if people are more likely to compliment something handmade and unique or something they've seen all over the place. (It doesn't matter either way since I'm still going to make things, just curious as to how our society sees it)

    1. So I've been thinking about this all week and you know, I honestly couldn't tell you! Because most people I don't think know I make clothes (unless they follow my blog which let's be real, not many people. haha) so they don't really ask. But out of the people that do know I sew, they do definitely ask me more often about my clothes than I assume they would normally. So I don't really know! But as for at school, ya I'd say I get asked a pretty fair amount but not like super frequently. Did that answer your question or am I just blabbing on and on? haha

    2. You answered it. =] I was never one to go ask someone I didn't know where she got a shirt or something, but I have been asked on occasion so I guess that made me curious!

    1. Wow thank you!! Jamie that really made me feel good for you to say, thank you. So jealous you're from Denver by the way, I love it there. I fell in love with that sewing store they have, what was it called- Fancy Tiger or something like that? Denver in general has so many fun little shops, ah you're making me totally miss it.

I didn't realize you'd started a new one though so I'm glad you commented. Also I totally didn't recognize your name at first, how's married life!? Oh and you better be careful because I may just take you up on your offer one of these days. I absolutely love your style!

  15. I want to make this dress, Haylee. Do you think I can make the pattern for me? What kind of fabric should I use?

    1. You have to trace it from a book so it's kind of a pain at first but you obviously could totally do it, (is there anything you can't do? Legitimately asking, I'm not sure I know one thing you don't know how to do in sewing!) But ya you could do it. Is it for church? What about a wool? I think that'd work well for winter especially and would look really cute on you. Not a super thick wool, just something light-medium weight.

  16. You don't look stupid in that first picture! Haha, but I know how posing in the cold is. So hard not to get shivery! I LOVE that dress. I think it's gorgeous, and the fabric is so pretty! You're inspiring me to get back to making myself clothes once in a while. I always thought it was more fun to work without a pattern, or to make up my own pattern.
