I think I'm the only person in Utah who is excited that it's freezing cold again this week. ha I definitely am though, I want to be able to wear this coat that took me forever and a day to finish. I seriously started this in like December I think... then I didn't work on it for a couple months after it turned into one of those projects and now I'm just barely getting around to completing it.

So here's hoping Utah stays cold for at least a few more weeks so I can actually wear it for a bit. (Please no one shoot me for saying that.)

I used the Burda Coat pattern for those that care. It's one of the patterns included in the Burda Style Handbook and even though I love this coat, I wouldn't recommend it.  It wasn't written well in my opinion and I found myself getting confused in places that I shouldn't have been getting confused on.  It was also a pain to have to trace out and add seam allowances to all the pattern pieces when I wasn't even drafting it so I didn't even get to feel "cool" for making my own, haha you know? Because if I am going to do all that extra work, I at least want to feel like it's worth it! I do love the Peter Pan collar though, and the silhouette, but honestly unless you are a pretty confident seamstress (which I'm not), I'd go with another pattern.

As for changes, I pretty much followed the pattern to a T except that I de-poofed the sleeves a little bit and I made the coat shorter. (4 inches I believe?)

Don't mind me pulling an Angelina Jolie on you guys in that last picture. haha seriously what the heck am I doing? I can't pose. I'd seriously like to see the reaction of everyone that drives by as this is happening because I imagine it would be quite a sight.

Have a great week everyone! Provo people come to the Bijou Market on Friday and Saturday, and everyone else go listen to this song. I've listened to it literally 56 times this week. haha I love it!

  1. Your new coat is super cute, I love the colour and it looks beautifully made - we are about to go into winter here in NZ and I am kind of excited because I just made a new coat too. It was unbearable to try on for fittings while the weather was hot since it is super warm wool so I am looking forward to wearing it on cold winter days :)

    1. Ahh man can I please come live with you? Not only because you're getting into Winter but because you live in NZ!! Soo incredibly jealous. I've only been there once but wasn't able to leave the airport (ha) so it doesn't count and I have vowed to go back, it's absolutely beautiful there. Anyways off topic, your coat turned out beautifully! Wow I love that fun purple color you used and the bias lining looks amazing. I don't blame you, I would be excited to wear it too!

  2. Love it - it's girly but not too frilly, and looks great with your outfit. I love BurdaStyle patterns but the directions... yeah.

  5. ah, burda is a mean mistress for sure. i've fallen into a pattern of tracing three or four out at a time so i can go to town when i'm ready, and i think i basically ignore the instructions! that way if you figure it out, it's almost like you made it up yourself....

this is darling. i love those mirrored tucks, and i hope you get as much cold as you need and no more :)!

    1. Ugh seriously why do they suck so bad? They have the cuutest patterns too so it really is unfortunate. I love that plan of attack though, haha and man I probably would have been better off knowing now how poorly written they are!

  8. Beautiful coat! I love the silhouette and it looks like a great fit! I made a coat last year and it took forever and a day too. I love my coat because I wore it nearly everyday this past winter. It feels great getting so much use out of a handmade garment! You will definitely get a lot of wear out of your coat come next fall and winter! What fabric did you use?

    1. K this comment got me so excited!! I'm so glad to hear you got a lot of use out of your coat, I really hope that's the case for this one too because like you said, it feels so good to have something you made that you love enough to wear a lot. But I used just some gray wool that I found at Joann's. And with a 50% off coupon I got in the mail, it was super cheap too!

  13. I was thinking of making this coat instead of buying the Pavot pattern from Deer and Doe as I think the two are similar. Seeing how yours looks in wool has strengthened my resolve. I expect to not understand Burda instructions so I would have to figure it out myself. Well done - the coat looks great!

    1. Wow they are extremely similar. I love that coat! I think you'd be good either way, both patterns are super cute. Thanks Katy for saying that though, it makes me feel good that my coat would help with your decision. :)

  16. You did a great job for a pattern with lame directions - I especially love that colour - slate-grey shades don't get made enough into clothes!

    1. Thanks Rachael! I agree, making this coat made me realize how much I'm lacking in grey clothes in general so it's nice to mix things up a bit.

    1. DO IT, seriously I have been so glad I did. It's just so much more versatile than say, a blouse or something, so you wear it so much more and as you know, that's always fun!

  19. Oh Burda... sometimes you're like a backstabbing friend...Haha! But seriously - you nailed this coat! It's gorgeous! So glad you persevered because it's really REALLY lovely.

  20. Hayley, I am so happy you stopped by Sew & tell. Your are incredibly talented! I love your coat and you are adorable! I would agree that the directions in the Burda Book stink. I ended up making the blouse from the book by completely ignoring them.

    1. Thank you so much Justine! And thank you for hosting suck a fun blog link-up. I loved getting to see everyone else's creations and creativity. Gahh and Burda, I'm super glad to know I'm not the only one because I started getting frustrated with myself. I really like how your blouse turned out though so ignoring them definitely worked! I love that pretty floral fabric you used.

  26. This coat is SO cute! I love the pleats and the large buttons. Burda is notorious for terrible directions. Almost everything I've made from the Burda magazines I have has been a nightmare.
