Sewn : Emerald Brocade Dress

Sunday, April 21, 2013

Ok so can I just say that I am so incredibly happy that this dress turned out. The entire time I was making it I kept thinking to myself, what the heck am I doing. I'm just not used to using such thick fabric for dresses so I was not expecting it to work.

Turns out I was wrong because I love it! I actually think it might be one of my favorite dresses I've made so far. I love the brocade because it makes the dress look so much more professional looking or something. I'm not really sure why but I'll take it! ha, I got it from Mood Fabrics for those that are curious.

*The neckline is even despite it not looking as such. I just have a bad habit of pulling my dress down on one side.

Pattern-wise, I used the Elisalex dress from By Hand London and the only thing I changed was the poofiness of the skirt because it was HUGE originally. Like I was kind of blown away. haha, nothing wrong with poofy skirts but there is just no way I could have been able to pull off the original dress.

I also cut a few inches off the hem because it still felt kind of bottom-heavy to me. (And try and ignore my sultry face going on in the picture above. haha but the picture shows the poofiness of the skirt well.  It's still quite poofy huh? Imagine 3 inches added to that!? Crazy.)

Close-up of the fabric.

And the inspiration/mood board/whatever you'd like to call it.
Emerald Pants.  Car.  Cafe.
Mint Brocade Pants.  Mint Jeans.
Mint Pleated Dress.  Dresses.  Bike.

  1. Wow, this dress looks gorgeous! The fabric makes the dress look really crisp and finished. I have been wanting to make a dress in this style too, so it's great seeing your version. The fabric and style look really beautiful on you! And your hair looks really pretty too!

You seem to be having a great experience buying fabric online from Mood! I've had good luck buying online from Fabric Mart. It's funny how rewarding online fabric shopping can be!

    1. Wow Suzanne thank you! What a sweet comment. Especially saying that about my hair, I really hate my hair so that meant a lot for you to say.

I have so far! I know it's been really nice, sometimes I get worried especially ordering from more mom and pop small online shops but so far I've been really lucky. Thanks for letting me know about Fabric Mart by the way, I'm going to bookmark that site, I'd never heard of it before!

  2. The projects I think will turn out great are the ones that turn out a disaster and vice versa. Why is that?!

Love this dress on you and also love the mood board!

  9. Your Elisalex is much more balanced than others I have seen (and I am a bottom-heavy lady, so I'm always looking to avoid accentuating it!). I like whatever you did to make it better.

  14. This is so beautiful! I'm jealous - I want one! The colour and the heavy fabric and the cut - it's all so perfect! Not to mention it suits you perfectly...you're so cute and elegant at the same time...have you ever considered modelling? (that's such a weird question, and I'm sure you have more ambitious things to do with your life, but I seriously think it every time I see your pictures...)

    1. Wow what a sweet, sweet comment. Just so you know I seriously re-read this 5 times, and then kept the notification e-mail for it in my inbox for like a week so that I could reread it again. haha so really thank you so much. I have considered modeling and was going to sign with an agency but I just, I don't know, with the whole one armed thing I just think it's kind of an impractical goal to have, you know? But seriously thanks so much, this really meant a lot to me.

By the way I'm considering selling this dress so if you are serious about wanting one, stay tuned. :) No pressure of course, just to let you know!

    2. Aw this was such a lovely response! I'm so glad my comment was nice for you to get :) I really meant it!

Oh and yes I was serious about wanting a dress like that (although I don't know how you can consider selling it! it looks so beautiful on you!) but I think I might be too short for it hehe...I am 5'2" and I suspect you are a lot taller!

  25. Wow this is amazing! I love the fabric soo much!
I made a dress this Winter in quite a thick wool (also much thicker than anything I had made a dress from before) and was dubious throughout the entire process whether it would work but then it turned out to be one of my favourite dresses too! Odd!
Def the right amount of poof in that skirt! :)
I may have to invest in this pattern now! Hehe!

  36. Hayley, you're absolutely the coolest. Thanks for that sweet sweet comment on my blog. i came to your blog just now and thought "this girl is why too cool to think my blog is cool, i mean LOOK AT HER" <-- that might not have made sense, but it did in my brain so just roll with it. you seem so down to earth and genuine and sweet, all qualities that make for a classy woman.

I'm definitely following you're blog, and gonna try and work up the courage to actually get my sewing machine fixed and make something cool this summer. look at that! you're literally inspiring me.

okay i'm done blabbing. just remember that you're pretty great. i'm out.

  37. So basically I have only ever sewn pillow covers, quilts, and the occasional hem job. This dress is SO gorgeous! I need to work up the courage to actually make something like this. And I adore the fabric you chose and your style board. You've got some great style girl! Definitely following you :) Thanks for checking out my blog. Can't wait to see what you create next!

  38. I just came across your blog and I am in love with your creations! Especially this dress, your wool coat and your sequin collar blouse. I may or may not have some serious closet envy going on right now, haha.

This dress is so beautiful. And, the color looks stunning on you! I've wanted to make something with a pink and gold brocade (probably a dress) for a few months but I haven't found the fabric in real life yet.
