Sewn : Gold Pencil Skirt

Monday, March 25, 2013

Well now that I've made what, like 5 sequined projects in a row, I'd say it'd probably be good for me to go easy for a while. ha
This last one was more of an attempt to use up extra fabric more than anything though, I had a bunch left over from the sequin gold collar top I made so I decided to just make a skirt out of it.

I used Butterick B5466, (same pattern as my sister's bridesmaid's skirts), and this fabric from Spandex House (in Light Gold).

I broke about 10 needles sewing this skirt, and I wish I was exaggerating. Turns out sequins aren't very sewing machine friendly, or at least for people like me who are too lazy to go and buy more durable ones.

Just for the record, I'm cutting my face off of these pictures because I suck at modeling and they're kind of killing me. haha

The only problem I have now is that I have no idea where to wear it too. It's not exactly church appropriate and I'm too scared to wear it to class for fear of distracting someone out of paying attention, ha so hopefully it doesn't end up just hanging in my closet.

Ok now I'm really done with sequins guys, I promise.

    1. K so I could not for the life of me decide if I could wear it to church or not but do you really think it'd be ok? Because I So want to but I'm just scared. ha I don't know I think maybe if I switched wards I'd wear it but in my current ward there are just a few somewhat judgmental peeps so I don't think this would fly for their definition of modesty. BOOO. Thank you for this brilliant list though! I really really want to go karaoke singing now, you don't know any fun places to go around Provo do you?

    2. YESSSS! Wear this to church! It's way too cute to not show off!

    3. And it doesn't matter what others definition of modesty is. If YOU feel comfortable and modest in it, that's all that matters. I find when I'm trying to justify wearing something... that's when I know that it's not modest enough for me. Does that make sense?

  6. Haylee, who is your new photographer? They did a super job but you should have put your face in here...it's too cute to leave out. I love this skirt and agree with Brissa you could wear it anywhere.

  8. This is so cute! I absolutely love it! You should schedule a girls' night so you can have an excuse to wear it out and about! Re: broken needles... I read recently that it's a good idea to remove the sequins from your seam allowances. That might help prevent broken needles if you decide to do another sequin project (although it sounds pretty tedious!). :)

    1. That is an absolute brilliant idea! Now I just wish I could fly you out for it. You and the rest of the MSN bloggers. :) For real though the next time I'm in New York I really want to meet up with you guys.
And huh, that's such smart idea. I never would have thought about doing that but it totally makes sense. Some of the needles broke while I was creating the waistband and most of that was topstitching so I wouldn't have been able to do it there but this definitely would have saved me a few needles on the hem. Thanks Sonja I'm going to try that next time. Well, if I can muster up the patience that is. haha, which might be highly unlikely.

  20. Great skirt! I wimped out on the sewing and bought a sequinned skirt just before Christmas. I did worry that maybe it would end up in my wardrobe unworn but actually it turned out to be one of the best buys ever. I wore it all the time over the holiday, it looked great dressed up but even better with an everyday cardigans and shoes like you are wearing.

  30. I love sequins. And it's so funny you commented on my blog when you did! Guess what I did at lunch today? I went to a fellow friends who quilts and she showed me how to use my vintage Singer and I have a simple quilting project that I know I can handle!!! I will be a sewer! I have always wanted to learn, and I know I can do it, I just have to do it! It's not clothing, but I bet I could make a pencil skirt sometime soon...maybe? :) Great blog, thanks for coming over to mine, hope to hear from you again, Take care,
