After finding this lovely shirt, I wanted to make something similar but without the long sleeves (one-handed persons nightmare), and I also wanted a Peter Pan collar (considering that you know, I never make things with Peter Pan collars..) ha, so I decided to just make it instead of buy it. Then on a whim I decided to make it a button down because any chance I can get of not having to insert a zipper I will gladly take.
The gold sequin fabric is from Spandex House (in the "Lt Gold" color), and the cream fabric is just from Joann's. (Same fabric I used for this Banksia top, and the lining for these bridesmaid skirts. I'm in love with it in case you can't tell, ha I love the way it flows.)
Then the pattern I used was the Violet Blouse pattern from Collette.
I love the back yolk (pictured above, no I'm not just including an awkward shot of my backside for the fun of it), ha and I also love the fabric-covered buttons down the front but I'm not loving the fit of this shirt. It's just.. awkward, I don't even know how to explain it. I think I probably should have made a size smaller but then I feel like it would have been too short or something. Grr I don't know, it's driving me crazy that I can't figure out why I don't like it. I did wear it to school today though and these girls completely made my day when they came up to ask me where I got it. I LOVE when people ask me that because then I get to feel all awesome and be like "oh I made it!" haha, life's little pleasures.
This last picture has struggle written all over it but it's the only one where my hair isn't hiding the collar so I thought I'd include it anyways.
Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Anyone have any fun plans? I'm not just asking to ask by the way, I sincerely want to know. ha, what are you guys doing? I don't have any plans but I always love hearing about everyone else's love life's so feel free to divulge. :)

This is so cute! I love it! The fit looks good to me! And the gold collar is such a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI need to think of some Valentine's plans! I'm kind of a last-minute scrambler when it comes to holidays, but I would like to cook something nice for hubs, I think...
Thank you so much Ginger! I'm totally the same way re:holidays. I hope you and the hubby ended up having a nice day though regardless! :)
DeleteYou are so awesome! And hott!
ReplyDeleteChelsea! haha this made me laugh, I love you!
DeleteGorgeous! I didn't realise the Violet had a back yoke. Shame you don't like the fit but I hope it doesn't stop you wearing it!
ReplyDeleteOh it won't, don't worry. :) Thanks Katy!
DeleteOh my gosh! This is fabulous! And it looks so perfect on you! I agree with you about the fit of the Violet blouse, maybe because I'm also small-framed? That said, I think you did the right thing to make it in a flowier fabric.
ReplyDeleteHubby and I always stay home and have a nice quiet evening together on Valentine's Day - neither of us are fans of crowds. I always make him his favorite dessert: Queen of Sheba Torte - chocolate almond torte with a poured chocolate glaze. Maybe a little champagne on the side, and that's a very nice evening for us!
That sounds AMAZING. Oh my gosh, can I come too? haha really though, that sounds delicious. I hope you guys ended up having a nice and romantic night!
DeleteSo adorable!!!
ReplyDeleteYOU are so adorable. :) Thank you Lily!
Deleteooh, Pretty, shiny...I am so distracted by that collar. Love it!
ReplyDeletehaha totally, I feel the same way every time I look into my closet and I sincerely HOPE that others don't feel that way when I wear it to class. haha because I definitely don't want to be the reason anyone fails Chemistry. :)
DeleteI love it, but I especially love the button-down version! I am on a button-down kick right now. =]
ReplyDeleteThanks Sara! I so am too, they are convenient too because they don't mess up your hair and/or make-up slipping on and off your head. haha
DeleteIt looks lovely on you, the size seems to look fine. Just seems like a flowing style of blouse and that collar is great! It's very nice when people ask 'where did you get it from?', I totally love that too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Yana! I appreciate you saying that because it will help me feel less self-conscious wearing it. I know most people wouldn't ever even notice but when you make something you're always hyper-aware of all of it's fault, ha don't you think? So good I'm glad that from an outsiders perspective you don't think it looks bad.
DeleteIt's beautiful - that fabric looks amazing and I the back yoke looks perfect x
ReplyDelete*I THINK the back yoke looks perfect lol
Deletehaha don't worry I knew what you meant. Thanks for such a sweet comment!
DeleteReally really beautiful on you - looks very high-end! You keep nudging me more and more toward selfish sewing.
ReplyDeleteWow thank you Kristin! haha and DO IT. Everyone needs a little personal love every once in a while, right? ;) Honestly I'm amazed with how unselfish you are with your sewing. I can make things for other people every once in a while but most the time I'm like "nope, all this work's going into something for me and no one else!" ha so props to you! It probably helps that your kids are the most adorable things ever.
DeleteJust found your blog a few weeks ago but I'm glad about it, it's such an inspiration! I think I will spend the next days reading your old entries.
ReplyDeleteLove the shirt, especially the buttons and the collar. It's a pity that you're unhappy with the fit.
But... weren't you incredibly cold taking that photo? Kudos!
Wow thank you so much Nina! That really meant a lot to me. To have you even want to spend two minute on my blog means a lot so really thank you. That made me feel really good. :)
DeleteAnd oh my YES. Thankfully I was able to jump into the warm car 10 seconds after but STILL. ha 20 degree weather is definitely not short-sleeve friendly. :)
So adorable! I would buy that
ReplyDeleteGahh Carly that means so much to me for you to say. ha really though, thank you!
DeleteWhat a brilliant idea - a little glimmer around the collar. But, while I think the fit is great, I agree that the shaping is off in a weird whats-going-on-it's-supposed-to-be-a-drapey-top-but-something's-just-not-right way. I say wear it as is because it does fit well, but if you are ever considering getting rid of it because you don't like the way it wears, consider adding princess seams???
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY. Wow you nailed it on the head, that is exactly what I was trying to explain!! (Man I need you around for future blog posts.) haha but I'm so loving the idea of princess seams. I think that'd make it look more feminine and flattering anyways so thats a really great suggestion, Thanks Amy!
DeleteSo cute! It looks really professional. (Also, you're soooo pretty and those jeans look gorgeous on you)
ReplyDeleteK so anonymous guess what? You will probably never know how much this comment meant to me. Like it completely turned my day around. There's something about a nice anonymous comment that makes it so much easier to believe. Like since you're not a fellow blogger or someone I know, I know you're not just "saying that just to say it" if that makes sense. So seriously THANK YOU. I sincerely hope you see this because really, this comment made my not-too-great day turn into a lot better of one. Thank you so much.
Deletecute! ^^
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Deletelove your blog! & am so happy you found mine so i could find yours! you make such awesome clothes, it's seriously inspiring. i am terrrrrrrrible at sewing, but have always wanted to know how! & yess i do go to uvu!
ReplyDeleteWell feel free to come over any time and I'll totally show you! Seriously though, it definitely is one of those things where it seems a lot harder than it really is, trust me! Or else I so would not be doing it, ha And UVU, awesome! I'll have to look out for you at school. Granted there's what, like 30 THOUSAND students or something insane like that now? So ya that's probably not going to happen, ha but wishful thinking right! :)

DeleteHi, would you be willing to share what fabric you used?
ReplyDeleteHi Stacey! Of course I don't mind at all, for the sequin gold fabric go here: http://www.spandexhouse.com/products.php?navId=96&navId2=267&navName=Sequin%20Fabrics
Deleteand then it's the "Lt gold" color. The cream fabric I'm having a really hard time finding online, but it is ALWAYS stocked at my local Joann's so I'm sure it'd probably be at yours too, hopefully. ha, and if not it's just an off-white solid sateen.
Good luck! I'd love to see what you make when it's through!
My favorite thing I think you've made!!
