Sewn : Scalloped Lace Bridesmaid Skirts

Sunday, July 22, 2012

My brother got married this Summer and my mom and I made the bridesmaid skirts.

Heidi (the bride and my new sister!) was wanting a pencil skirt with lace so I used this skirt as inspiration,

and we came up with these,

We used Butterick B5466
and daisy lace fabric from Mood. It was nice because it turned out to be both mine and Heidi's favorite of all of the laces that I managed to find and it also happened to be about 1/5 the price so that worked out really well.

A word of advice for anyone who's wanting to make a skirt out of venice lace though, HAVE ACCESS TO A SERGER. Oh my gosh, my serger saved me. Polyester type lace doesn't fray but heavier weight laces fray like crazy. So seriously have a serger on hand and if that's not possible, you can come use mine. ha seriously though you need a serger. Also for the scalloped hem, I used fray check and fray check spray. You can typically find lace that already has a scalloped selvage edge but this lace didn't so we just created one. It was tedious but really easy so don't fret if you can't find scalloped lace.

And just for the fun of it..

:) haha sorry, I had to.

i love how you went with skirts, these beauts will be such a wonderful addition into any wardrobe. they really do flatter all body types and can go casual with a chambray shirt or dressy for evening wear too. you and your Mom did a fabulous job making them.

Heidi is the most darling bride - i am swooning over her tiered dress too. awesome sunshiney day you got as well, what a great time it must have been. xo ♥

  6. So, I LOVE those skirts. What's funny is when I saw pics of their wedding on Facebook, I seriously thought, "Where did they buy those skirts? I want one!"
You are an amazing seamstress! They looked great and I thought the whole outfit was super hip and cute, especially for bridesmaids. Love.

  9. How did you learn to sew and how long have you been seeing for? You are so good! :) another question, what will you be studying at UVU?

Oh and what are your favorite blogs?

    1. You're so sweet! I learned how to sew from my mom when I was about 7 or 8. I did this thing called 4-H and she taught me through that. Then I stopped doing it for a while (because I really didn't like it at first) until my sophomore year of high school (so 4 years ago) then I started back up again and this time do it a lot because I actually enjoy it now. :)

I'm planning to just get my generals at UVU, then I'm hoping to transfer to either BYU or a school back east to study Fashion Design or Dietetics, depending on which school I end up going to.

Gahh that is the toughest question ever. Ok after thinking about it a bit (which is why it's taken a few days to reply to this, sorry!) I've decided that my 3 most favorite blogs are 1. Eat, Drink Chic, 2. Chocolate Covered Katie, and 3. Cotton and Curls. In my "favorites blog" tab on my computer though, I have like 50+ blogs so this by no means is a completed list. ha, I'm blog obsessed!

  11. Oh I love it! This is a really cute, classy look... and unlike most bridesmaids outfits, I would definitely wear this one again. To work/church/a classy luncheon... plus you can mix-and-match the pieces to wear them all the time.

I am so glad that was so good for you! That's the whole point, to bring smiles every day, so that makes me happier than you could possibly imagine! I love your vision too. I know I don't really know you, but based on what I've seen from your blog that just seems so perfectly you!

    1. Sarah! Thank you so much girly. Honestly I couldn't even tell you where it's from, I've lost the link after only saving the picture on my desktop. It *might* have been Asos though. Gahh I'm sorry. It seriously is like my #1 pet peeve when blogs are missing links so I can't believe myself right now.
